Pastor Johnny C. Simmons
Rev. Johnny Simmons was born in Lufkin, Texas. He moved to Houston during his teenage years. He is a product of the Houston Independent School District. He graduated from James Madison High School in 1978. He attended McMurry University and Texas Southern University. While at Texas Southern University, he received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree of Science in Physical Education. While in college, Rev. Simmons joined the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Rev. Simmons served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1983 - 1987. He was been employed by the Houston Independent School District for 36 years.
In 2009, he was voted Coach of Influence of the year by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was voted by his peers as Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School's Teacher of the Year for 2012 and Houston Area Alliance of Black Educator's - Teacher of the Year - Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School for 2012.
He was a member of Progressive New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, under the tutelage of Dr. N.S. Brown. He later joined Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served seventeen years under the teachings of Pastor Castro L. Walker, Sr. While at Jerusalem; he served as an Associate Minister, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, Mission I Teacher, and Sunday School Teacher.
He is married to Angela and is the father of four children: Chynna, Elysha (Jamal), Allyson, Ashleigh, granddaughter Cimone, and grandsons Jamal and Jordan.
After being called, commissioned, ordained, and assigned by God, Rev. Simmons accepted the call to pastor the Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in April of 2012.
